The Louisiana Police Jury Association Black Caucus represents African American parish leaders working to promote equitable representation, economic growth, education, and community development.
The Louisiana Black Caucus Police Jury Association is committed to uplifting and advocating for our people through intentional initiatives. This September, we focus on two pillars of progress:
Initiative 1: Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Awareness
Initiative 2: HBCU Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and for Black communities, the numbers are sounding an alarm. Across the nation, suicide rates are rising at a faster pace among Black Americans than in many other groups. This isn’t just a statistic—it’s a reality that has touched our families, our neighborhoods, and even our leadership circles. Many of us, myself included, have lost loved ones to suicide..

In 2024, a significant milestone was reached in Iberia Parish under the leadership of Black Caucus President Lady Brown, who spearheaded a resolution that established the first-ever early voting location in Jeanerette, Louisiana. This new voting center, situated in a predominantly Black city, marks an important chapter in the history of Iberia parish. For the first time, residents of Iberia Parish were able to cast their early votes in Jeanerette, promoting greater accessibility and civic engagement.
This historic achievement not only reflects the Black Caucus's dedication to equitable representation but also addresses long-standing barriers to voting in underserved areas. The establishment of this early voting location empowers more citizens to participate in the democratic process and strengthens the voice of the community in local and state elections. This new development is a testament to our caucus commitment to fostering civic participation and ensuring that every resident has the opportunity to engage in early voting without unnecessary hurdles.
